ARTIFACT:

This is a Belgian medal for the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and the 75th Anniversary of the usage of Postage Stamps in Belgium. The medal is by G. (Godefroid) DeVreese, a Belgian medalist who lived from 1861-194The UPU was established in 1874 and its headquarters has been in Berne, Switzerland ever since. The obverse of the medal reads UNION POSTALE UNIVERSELLE 1844 1924, and the reverse reads LE TIMBRE POSTE EN BELGIQUE 1849 - 1ST JUILLET 1924.


This medal was awarded to Belgian Postal Service Employees who had worked at least 25 years with the Service at the time the medal was made. 

Hendriks Medal Corner States: 
The proper name for this medal is "The Commemorative Decoration for the 75th Anniversary of the issue of the first postal stamp in Belgium and the 50th Anniversary of Belgium's participation in the universal postal union". This bronze medal was instituted on 2 May 1924 and awarded to employees and workmen of the Belgian Postal Services who had completed, on 1 July 1924, 25 years of good and loyal service.

Approximately 3-3/4" in height and 1-3/8" in width.
