ARTIFACT:
This is a beautiful circa 1920s steamship captain's visor hat from the Australind Steam Shipping Company. Initially known as the West Australian Steam Navigation Co., Australind came into being in 1904 after the merger of Trinder, Anderson, Bethel, Gwyn & Co. The line ran between Britain and Western Australia, as well as between Freemantle, England and Singapore, bearing emigrants between the countries. The hat is in high quality beaver felt with a roan leather lining, and is a size 7. It bears a beautiful bullion badge showing an anchor and the company's signature swan flag enameled in blue and yellow. In this version of the badge, the swan is facing the "fly" as opposed to the "hoist" (right-facing). The hat was made by Paisley's Limited of Glasgow, Scotland and has a nice clear maker's mark in the lining of the hat.
