ARTIFACT: This is a 2nd prize high-wheel bicycle medal for the 1882 New England Fair Bicycle Tournament held at Boston. The medal is by T.D. Carl of Worcester, Massachusetts, and comes in its original silk-lined box. The medal shows a whimsical Mercuryesque figure astride a high-wheeler.

VINTAGE: Circa 1882.

SIZE: Medal: approximately 3-1/8" height and 1-9/16" width; box: 2-1/2" x 3-3/4" x 7/8".

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Gilt brass; silk, cardboard.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal T-style pin with C catch, chains; hinged box with locking clasp.

MARKINGS: T.D. GARD WORCESTER.

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): The medal shows some light wear and tarnish; the box shows some areas of moderate to heavy exterior wear with peeling along the edges.
