Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a wonderful circa 1880s fireman's badge for the North Shore Staten Island Fire Department (N.S.S.I.F.D.) Aquehonga Hook & Ladder No. 1, which eventually became the FDNY Engine 208 (currently 158). Aquehonga Hook & Ladder No. 1 was organized on the first day of the year, 1879, and serviced from Port Richmond to Mariners' Harbor, Staten Island. Aquehonga was one of the North Shore Department's four ladder companies. The badge is a great example of an early New York City fire badge. It is shield-shaped with a raised "1" at the center and is numbered 3 on a small oval plate.
