ARTIFACT:

This is a beautiful 1849 San Francisco, California Argonaut Medal with wonderful, detailed illustrations. One depicts the Mexican Republic logo; a second depicts the Gold Rush (including a tiny Eureka"); a third illustration shows a wagon-train; and the fourth is of a grizzly bear. Named to John D. Townsend who sailed for California from New York. Townsend was a prominent criminal attorney. Also named is the USS Frigate Independence. The Independence sailed into Monterey in 184It is assumed that Townsend arrived in California aboard this ship.

Circa 1849.

SIZE:

About 1-1/2" in diameter; 1-5/8" in height with loop.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Silver.
