Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a circa World War II E. K. 1st Kl ((Eisernes Kreuz), or Iron Cross 1st Class, and a KvK (Kriegsverdienstkreuz) 1st Kl. , or War Merit Cross 1st Class. Both of these medals were earned by Georg-Waldemar Lerche, Luftwaffe veteran of the Battle of Britain and the Eastern front, and eventual Major. Included with the medals are several color copies of documents and photographs pertaining to Lerche's service and his awards, which were received in 1940-194The Iron Cross was conferred for bravery in action and other meritorious military acts, and the 2nd class version hangs from a ribbon whereas the 1st class does not. The War Merit Cross was one step below the Iron Cross, and the version with swords was awarded to enlistees who demonstrated service above the call of duty (civilians could receive the cross without swords).
