Description

ARTIFACT:

Wonderful WWI 102nd Field Signal Battalion, 27th Division American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) commemorative match box holder by Dieges & Clust named to original owner. The center of the bronze holder shows the 102nd insignia - two crossed signal flags, a torch rising up between, a center medallion that shows six stars meant to symbolize the Orion constellation and the letters inside are "NYD", beneath a scroll that reads: "PRO PATRIA VIGILANS". Along the top of the match book holder it shows: "102" in embossed detail and on either side of the center embellishment it reads: "FIELD SIGNAL 27TH DIVISION A. E. F." and along the bottom: BATTALION". The reverse is named to the original owner and includes the Battalion's battle honors earned. It reads: "R. S. CARPENTER" in hand detail and shows a shield with the letters: "RF" on the viewer's left and a griffin on the right. Beneath in the center is the date "1918" and surrounding it reads: "HINDENBURG LINE, EAST POPERINGHE LINE, DICKEBUSCH SECTOR, LA SELLE RIVER, VIERSTRAAT RIDGE, JONC DE MER RIDGE, GUILLEMONT FARM, AND ST MAURICE RIVER".

CONDITION:

8- (Very Fine&emdash;Excellent): The matchbook holder shows minor to moderate wear, is slightly misshapen, the enamel and gilt details are in remarkable condition, the bronze shows an overall handsome patina.
