ARTIFACT: This is a wonderful historical a United States Navy officer's belt buckle cast from salvaged bronze from the USS Maine. The sinking of the Maine precipitated the Spanish-American War, brought about by an explosion at Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. The Maine was raised in 1912 and scuttled off of Florida. The buckle is of two-piece construction and is gold-plated. It was thought that perhaps the buckle had been presented to Captain Charles Dwight Sigsbee, but the dates engraved do not seem to correspond to dates of any significance in his life.

VINTAGE: Circa 1900.
