This is a Wonderful circa 1870 Small, Lapel, or UNDER Lepel United States Detective Service 5-point Star Badge.

ARTIFACT: This is a Wonderful circa 1870 Small, Lapel, or UNDER Lapel, 5 Point Star Badge for a Detective of the United States Detective Service. This was a civilian Detective Agency that was formed from many members of the wartime National Detective Police, a covert operation under the auspices of the Union War Department. After dissolution of that Agency at the end of the Civil War, the United States Detective Service evolved into a large Agency in competition with Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, with many loose ties to the US Government. These ties led to the undertakings of many clandestine investigations for the government in the Post-CW years, all the way up to the President.

The diminutive size of this badge relates directly to some of the known Civil War period National Detective Police badges. It is a wonderful old piece of US History, with ties to the Government in Washington DC, all the way out to the American West.

Circa 1870s.

Approximately: 2-3/16" in height x 1-7/8" in width.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Hand Cut, hand Stamped Nickel with black painted Lettering, and a lead Soldered Nickel-plated brass one-piece pin.

ATTACHMENT:

Vertical Safety Style pin.
