Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a very rare circa 1930s Italian Air Force "Atlantic" pilot award wing. Only 55 of these wings were manufactured, and they were presented to the pilots who made a successful round-trip transAtlantic flight while accompanying Air Marshal Italo Balbo in 193Balbo led fifty-five planes from Italy to the United States and back. This wing was manufactured by the Fratelli (Brothers) Breccia of Rome and was modified (the crown as removed) after 1943 to demonstrate allegiance to the RSI (Repubblica Sociale Italiana) in the North, or the Fascist Forces. It has a blue enameled "A" at its center. A pilot who receives this wing's full title is "Military Pilot of the Royal Air Force Who Have Flown Completely Over the Full Atlantic Ocean".<
