Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a very rare USS Akron (Goodyear Zeppelin) ring laying ceremony commemorative medal from October 31, 1929 in Akron, Ohio. Built by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Company, the United States Navy USS Akron (ZRS-4) was the largest airship ever made in the United States up to that point. The Akron had several accidents and a coast-to-coast voyage before she went down in bad weather on April 4, 1933 off New Jersey, killing all but three souls on board.

About 3-1/16" in diameter.

Stamped Duralumin.

Oval hole at top for ribbon.
