Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a unique framed parade flag for the United States Air Service 11th Aero Squadron, either used for welcoming World War I troops home or used in a subsequent 11th reunion. The flag features the squadron 's mascot, "Mr. Jiggs", smoking a cigarette and casually carrying a missile under his arm. George McManus, an officer of the 11th, created the Mr. Jiggs cartoon character.

VINTAGE:

Circa World War I - 1920s.

SIZE:

Flag: approximately 16-3/4" in width and 11-1/4" in height (frame is 20-3/8" by 14-5/8").

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Cotton/silk, glass, wood, paper backing, metal hardware.

ATTACHMENT:

Hangers on frame.

MARKINGS:

Framer tags.

ITEM NOTES:

CONDITION:

7 (Very Fine): The flag has been well preserved with minor fading, some small areas of discoloration (most noticeable one is over the word "11th") and no rips.
