ARTIFACT:

This is a wonderful, unique, just post-Civil War, circa 1867 "Police", or Village Patrol, badge, jeweler made and engraved in Coin Silver from Monroe Wisconsin.
The badge is named to W. Sandoe, William Sandoe, a harness maker originally from Stephenson County, IL by way of Pennsylvania, who learned Harness making in (at the firm of D. F. Corson & Son) and lived in Monroe, Wisconsin from 1860 to 1867, except for time spent with the 93rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Late in 1867 Sandoe returned to Orangeville, IL to set up his own Harness Shop there. Some time in 1867 before leaving (the date is lightly scratched into the back of the badge) Sandoe worked in the Village Patrol of Monroe, a predecessor to the Monroe Police Department of today.
This is a one of a kind piece of EARLY Wisconsin Law Enforcement history.
