ARTIFACT:
This is a scarce, numbered United States Navy Civil War Campaign medal attributed to Landsman George F. Gilbert of Marshfield, Missouri. Gilbert was awarded the medal in November 1910. The medal had been instituted in 1908 as a way of recognizing the meritorious efforts of members of both the United States Navy and Marine Corps so many years previously. Landsman Gilbert served aboard the "Santiago de Cuba" (pictured above) during the latter half of the Civil War, and consequently took part in the Fort Fisher action of December 1864-January 1865. This important seizure of Confederate Fort Fisher under Union Major General Benjamin Butler was supported and covered by the Santiago men, who took a break from capturing blockade runners to participate. Private Gilbert had also served two years earlier with Company F, 29th New Jersey Infantry. There is much accompanying paperwork, including copies of pertinent pages from the Floyd, Johnson & Paine Inc. (FJ&P) auction catalog from May 22, 2003 and a copy of the sales receipt from the auction: payment of $1700 plus commission. Also included are copies of Gilbert's service and pension records.
