ARTIFACT:

This is a Scarce 5 Digit WWII 1944 USSR Order of the x000D Patriotic War 2nd Class Type 2 # 70623.

x000D x000D

Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class Number 70623 was x000D awarded on March 12, 1944 by Order of the Day of the Armored and Mechanized x000D Forces of the Leningrad Front to Guards Senior Lieutenant Aron Khaimovich x000D London, chief of the chemical service of the 31st Independent Guards Tank x000D Regiment. During the fighting of January 15 near Pulkovo, coordinated the x000D interaction with the attached sapper units. Following the preliminary artillery x000D bombardment, he took a sapper platoon and on his own initiative approached an x000D antitank ditch. When the sapper platoon commander was taken out, London assumed x000D command. He saw to it that a path was cleared across the ditch. Early on London x000D was wounded, but he dressed his own wounds and stayed on the battlefield until x000D the passageway was completed. When most sapper had been taken out by enemy x000D fire, London gathered some infantrymen who were close by and completed the x000D work. He was decorated by the regimental commander for his bravery and heroism.

London had been wounded twice before, in July 1943 and x000D January 194His other awards were a Medal for Courage (February 1943), Red x000D Star (May 1945), Defense of Leningrad and Victory over Germany medals, and a x000D Combat Merit Medal in 1950. He was born in 1921 in Vitebsk into a Jewish family, x000D joined the army in November 1939 and joined the party in 194By the end of x000D the war he served as deputy chief of staff for reconnaissance of the 31st x000D Guards Tank Regiment. By 1947 he was a captain and studying at the army's x000D Higher Armored and Mechanized Forces Officer School. He was still serving in x000D 1950 and lived in Oranienbaum.
