ARTIFACT: Scarce 1972 USS Trepang SSN 674 nuclear submarine slim Zippo. The USS Trepang is a Sturgeon-class attack submarine and is the second to hold the name, named after a marine animal sometimes called a 'sea slug' or a 'sea cucumber'. USS Trepang was built in Groton, Connecticut and was launched on September 27, 1969 and commissioned in August 1970 with Commander D. R. Sackett, Jr., at the helm. Her first non-local mission was in the arctic during 1971 beneath an ice cap collecting data and research on the geographic nature of an ice cap. During 1972, she returned home for upkeep and submarine attack training. In 1973, she was drydocked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for Nuclear Technical Proficiency Inspection before leaving for the coast of Florida for weapons testing. This example is factory engraved on both sides, one that reads: "USS TREPANG" in the center and "SSN 674" on a scroll beneath with an image of a submarine in the center that is surrounded by two upright Submarine Dolphins. The other side shows the Officer's badge emblem, Submarine Dolphins and reads: "USS TREPANG SSN 674" beneath.
