ARTIFACT:
Nice 1963 United States Navy Slim Zippo for U.S.S. Outagamie County LST-1073. The lighter is factory engraved on both sides, one showing an image of the vessel coasting through the water, displaying a white number: "1073" and beneath reads: "U.S.S. OUTAGAMIE COUNTY LST-1073". The reverse shows a turtle 'docked' on the shore of the ocean and surrounding it reads: "LST 1073 USS OUTAGAMIE COUNTY". The vessel served in WWII and was one of the few LSTs that were kept from the scrap pile after the war and instead given a name. For a short time after WWII, she enjoyed a small break, but was recommissioned in 1950 and redeployed with the 187th Regimental Airborne Combat Team and the 24th Infantry Division and was engaged in missions from Japan to Korea, including Operation Big Switch. During the Vietnam War, the Outagamie County LST-1073 was engaged in combat missions from 1969 until 1971 and made numerous trips to Da Nang, Chu Lai, Cua Viet, An Thoi, and Ha Tien, and South Vietnam. After the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the ship and her crew were honored with six battle stars for Korea and eight for service in Vietnam, along with three stars for the Combat Action Ribbon.
