ARTIFACT: This is a rare and unique personal item: a tin of lip balm prepared for Hitler's elite SS soldiers for winter combat conditions. The Schutz-Staffel (SS) began in 1925 as a bodyguard unit for Adolf Hitler and went on to become one of the greatest and most influential groups in the Third Reich. The tin is stuck shut, but seems to still have some of the balm inside..

VINTAGE: Circa 1941-1944.

SIZE: Approximately 1/2" in height and 1-3/8" in diameter.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Painted steel.

ATTACHMENT: Two piece tin (stuck shut).

MARKINGS: The tin is marked (as best can be made out) and translates to:

Frostschutz Salbe Antifreeze Ointment (Lip Balm)
Wehr________Mark VI Defense (probably factory) Mark VI
Osnabr__ (Probably Town Name/Location of Factory)
SS-Packung SS (Schutz-Staffel) Pack.
