ARTIFACT:
This is a rare circa 1921 United States Mail Steamship Company deck plan for three sister ships: the SS Panhandle State, the SS Creole State and the SS Old North State. The United States Mail Steamship Company, also known as the U.S. Mail Line, was a short-lived passenger ship company begun in 1920 by the United Sates Shipping Board (USSB). All of the liners run by the company had originally been German vessels either taken during WWI or awarded to the United States after the war. This plan is for three sister ships, one of which (SS Old North State) later became the WWII US Army hospital ship USAHS Marigold. The SS Creole State became known as SS President Hayes and the SS Panhandle State took the name of President Monroe.
