ARTIFACT:
This is a 1930's SS Manhattan, United States Lines Luxury Steamship souvenir lapel pin. The SS Manhattan was launched in 1931 and built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation. The ship cost about $21 million to make, which was an extreme cost and gamble as this was built during the Depression. Later on, in 1941, the SS Manhattan was commissioned to the US Navy for World War II to be manned by the Coast Guard, making it the largest vessel ever to be operated by the US Coast Guard.
