Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a 1942 copy of the United States Army (War Department) / US Navy booklet entitled "A Pocket Guide to China". The book gives a brief overview of the culture of the Chinese people. The guide is profusely illustrated by famous cartoonist Milton Caniff (not just back section, artwork in the rest appears to be by him as well, at least from the pic shown). There is a section in the back titled: "How to Spot A Jap" and highlights non-PC differences between Chinese and Japanese individuals and is absent in the later 1944 version. The guide also contains a few pages of helpful words and phrases translated into English.
