ARTIFACT: Rare 1920's – 1930's Papal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice First Class Gold Medal. The planchet, suspended from a red, white, and yellow silk ribbon, is in the form of a cross with fluers-de-lis embellishments in the angles of the cross. The center of the medal shows the bust of Pope Leo XIII and surrounding it reads: "LEO XIII P. M. ANN. X." which translates to: "tenth year of his pontificate". The reverse features papal emblems and surrounding reads the motto: "PRO ECCLESIA ET PONTIFICE" and the branches of the cross read: "PRID", "CAL", "IAN", and "1888". The medal was awarded for distinguished service to the Roman Catholic Church and was worn on the right side of the chest. The medal is with its original case, lined with satin and velvet on the inside with a maker mark that reads: "A. CASAZZA VIA S. CHARA N. 39 ROMA". The seal on the outer side of the red case features the Coat of Arms of the Holy Sec and Vatican City, and also dates the version of the cross.

VINTAGE: Circa 1920's – 1930's

SIZE: Approximately 4" in total length; Planchet: 1-15/16" x 1-3/4"; Case 4-1/2" x 2-1/8"

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Gilt aluminum, silk, velvet, silk, brass, steel safety pin.

ATTACHMENT: Safety pin. Ornate brass hinge closure on case.

MARKINGS: "A. CASAZZA VIA S. CHARA N. 39 ROMA"

CONDITION: 8+ (Excellent): The medal and case show minor wear, nearly all of the gilt details remain, overall excellent condition.
