Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a pair of 1940s Somerville, Massachusetts police rifle instructor badges, one being a presentation badge to Theodore F. Roth in gilt sterling. These badges came to us along with a Boston police sergeant badge of Roth's. The badges read INSTRUCTOR POLICE SOMERVILLE and PISTOL INST'R POLICE SOMERVILLE and both show the seal of the City of Somerville at center. Included is a period newspaper article regarding the badges and the officers involved from the Somerville Journal and Press.

VINTAGE:

Circa 1940s (one dated 1944).

SIZE:

Both badges approximately 2-1/8" in height and 1-7/16" in width.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Gold-plated brass and gilt sterling, both with painted lettering; newsprint.

ATTACHMENT:

Vertical pin with drop-in locking swivel catch on each.

MARKINGS:

STERLING PRESENTED TO T. F. ROTH FROM SOMERVILLE POLICE 1944 on reverse of one badge.

8- (Very Fine-Excellent): Badges show light to medium wear and tarnish; newspaper clipping is in good condition.
