ARTIFACT:

What we have here is a fine quality WWI USAS US Air Service Pilot (actually Military Aviator then Junior Military Aviator) Wing Badge by Dan Dunham of San Antonio Texas. It is made in the "Dallas" style, in 3 separate pieces affixed to a brass backing plate wrapped in (in this case) black velvet.

Another of the Putnam Green Collection Wings, but not a piece out of the Campbell Collection. And I was not the original supplier of this wing, so I do not know any more if its history. But I do know that it is just an exquisite wing to look at in hand!

Not all of Dan Dunham's Wings used the "Faux Bullion" US, but the ones that did, really POP! The gold of the US becomes two-tone: yellow on the surface where it was exposed to light wear, and then a rosier, lacquered appearance in the recesses, where the surface is over 100 years old! This wing saw some use, and the velveteen backing material is mostly split on the edges, and s piece of it is missing from the back, but these details really do not detract at all, if anything they contribute to a "been there" look. I only wish we knew the name of the Aviator they had "been there" with...

VINTAGE: World War I.

SIZE: Approximately: 3/4" in height x 3-3/8" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Sterling Silver, gilt brass, brass, woven wool, and nickel.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with come-under locking catch.

MARKINGS: N/A.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a USAAF collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. KAEJJP22 LEDGEX11/20/23 SEJJJX11/20/23

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): the silver and gold surfaces are so gorgeous, that it really can't knock this wing down any lower just because of the wear to the backing velvet. Its too bad that there is a bit missing from the back, and that it is separated at the edges, but the gorgeous gunmetal patina and brilliance of the gold US make those bits of clothe wear and tear almost invisible. A piece anyone would be proud to have in their collection.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
