Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a wonderful, huge (11"x17") September 1956 photo of the flight deck of the United States Navy aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42). This action shot shows a U.S. Navy blimp hovering above the deck where a helicopter and F2H Banshee jets are parked. Launched April 29, 1945, the Roosevelt was classified as a CVA at the time of this photo (it was redesignated CV-42 in 1975). This photo was taken a few months after Roosevelt underwent a refit and recommissioning. Here the ship is pictured in the Guantanamo Bay area. The USS Roosevelt was the first carrier in the US Navy to operate an all-jet aircraft under controlled conditions. She was decommissioned in 1977.
