ARTIFACT:
This is a fantastic circa early World War II wide band ring in nickel-plated brass. The ring shows three Luftwaffe Bombers (they look to be Henkel He 111s) from the bottom, in flight with bomb bays open, over the rallying motto: WIR FAHREN GEGEN ENGELLAND (We Go Against England). The small Baltic Cross aircraft markings are visible on the wing ends. The Battle of Britain lasted from early July 1940 through the end of October that same year.
The motto comes from the popular war song of the period Engelland-Lied (The England Song):
Heute wollen wir ein Liedlein singen,
Trinken wollen wir den kuehlen Wein,
Und die Glaeser sollen dazu klingen,
Denn es muss geschieden sein.
Reich mir deine Hand,
Deine weisse Hand!
Leb wohl, mein Schatz, leb wohl, lebe wohl!
Denn wir fahren, denn wir fahren,
Denn wir fahren gegen Engelland, Engelland!
Ahoi!
Unsre Flagge wehet auf dem Maste,
Sie verkuendet uns des Reiches Macht.
Denn wir wollen es nicht laenger leiden,
Dass der Englischman darueber lacht.
Reich mir deine Hand,
Deine weisse Hand!
Leb wohl, mein Schatz, leb wohl, lebe wohl!
Denn wir fahren, denn wir fahren,
Denn wir fahren gegen Engelland, Engelland!
Ahoi!
Kommt die Kunde, dass ich bin gefallen,
Dass ich schlafe in der Meeresflut,
Weine nicht um mich, mein Schatz, und denke:
Fuer das Vaterland, da floss mein Blut!
Reich mir deine Hand,
Deine weisse Hand!
Leb wohl, mein Schatz, leb wohl, lebe wohl!
Denn wir fahren, denn wir fahren,
Denn wir fahren gegen Engelland, Engelland!
Ahoi!
