ARTIFACT: This is a Great Ca 1942 United State Army Air Forces Glider Pilot Wing in Coin Silver in the "Juarez" Pattern designed by Walter Lampl, it is the Early Type, with a large G applied to a regular USAAF Pilot Wing

This wing was authorized in September 1942, and the earliest examples of it were made like this one, with a G applied over a regular Pilot WIng.

It has been hypothesized by noted historian Tod Rathbone that these wings, first known as the "Juarez" type, then later thought to be manufactured by Walter Lampl, whose maker mark shows up on some, were actually produced by Bell Trading Company FOR Walter Lampl, after he designed them.

Going along with this very likely hypothesis, this particular wing would also be considered of "early" manufacture since it is made of Coin Silver, which was acquired by jewelers in the southwest by purchasing Pesos from Mexico. Later the US Government put a stop to the Wartime cross-border silver trade, and supplied sterling silver to southwestern jewelers.
