ARTIFACT: This is a great circa 1890s driver or messenger hat for the American Express Company. American Express originated in Buffalo, New York in 1850 as an express mail company, and is still in business today. The simple hat has a design with a visor very similar to that worn by French police. It has a wonderful large, red, white and blue enameled badge numbered 5085 on the front. It also still has its original union label inside and the New York City manufacturer information can be read clear as day.

VINTAGE: Circa 1890s.

SIZE: No size tag: approximate size 7 1/2.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Wool, leather liner, gilt brass, plated brass enamel.

ATTACHMENT: Strap, buttons.

MARKINGS: 5085; Vogel Brothers Outfitters 42nd St. Cor. 8th Ave. New York; United Cloth Hat and Cap makers of North America Union Made Registered Cloth Hats and Caps.

ITEM NOTES: This is from an express company uniform collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VEJJX00 LBGEJX9/13

CONDITION: 7- (Very Fine-): The cap has only a few very small moth holes; there are some areas of light to medium wear to the liner and beneath the visor; a few small bits of the enamel are missing and the badge has some very small areas of tarnish and minor oxidation.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
