Description
Gorgeous, large, and heavy (over 5.25 ounces) WWI Service Medal presented to American Car & Foundry Co. members of management, produced by Gorham Manufacturing Co. The center shows an image of a foundry worker with his sledgehammer raised and looking as though he might drop it on a helmet sitting on an anvil with a snake curled around it in the striking position. There is a nice, relief detailed ship in the background and the outer edge of the medal reads: "PRESENTED BY THE AMERICAN CAR AND FOUNDRY COMPANY 1917 - 1918". The reverse of the medal features Columbia in beautiful relief detail with the signature "CB - JK" (denoting potential artistic collaboration between Beach and Kilenyi). Below Columbia's outstretched arm it reads: "FOR SERVICE FAITHFULLY RENDERED" and the Statue of Liberty can be seen in the background. The edge of the medal shows a maker's mark and reads: "STERLING". This award was given in bronze, silver, and gold - most commonly found in bronze as it was awarded to individual employees for their service and dedication during the war. This example is sterling and reserved for members of management and is quite rare and was exquisitely designed during the peak period of medallic arts.
