This Federal badge was worn at many of the Union shipyards during the war, but verbal provenance has this badge being worn at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The center of the slightly convex, round badge shows an engraved eagle clutching an anchor in its talons, it bears a shield on its chest and surrounding it reads: "NAVY YARD POLICE" with a border of star embellishments.
