ARTIFACT:

This beautiful hand-engraved coin silver badge dates from at least the 1870s, but is quite likely from the 1850s. It is made of a thick sheet of coin silver, with a large one-piece pin, appearing to also be coin silver, carefully silver-soldered onto the back. The extension of the pin beyond the bottom of the badge points to it being of 1860s or earlier construction, and the 1857 Dover Town Report lists the Tiger Engine Company #2 as being a Hunneman (Boston)-built hand tub constructed in 184The Tiger #2 hand tub was still in use as of the 1896 Town Report, although its condition was listed as poor. It was also stated at this time that the engine had been in use by the city for 42 years (since 1853 or 1854). The badge is in excellent condition, but as is to be expected, much of the old "jeweler's black" has fallen out of the lettering and number, revealing the beautiful hand engraving beneath.
