Description
This is a fantastic circa 1880s through early 1900s Nashua, New Hampshire Assistant Marshal and Marshal badge and plaque grouping. Around 1882, William Wallace Wheeler was appointed Assistant City Marshal of the Nashua, New Hampshire Police Department. This beautiful hand-engraved eagle-top badge by Lovell of Boston dates to that period. In 1902, the Police Department presented Assistant Marshal Wheeler with a large 10 karat gold badge. Then in 1905 when Wheeler became the full City Marshal, he had a three-star plaque applied over the "ASST" panel on his presentation badge to reflect his new title. Marshal Wheeler's name appears, along with the name of the city's Mayor, Andros B. Jones, three Police Commissioners and the Superintendent Police Signal, upon the plaque installed with the then-new police call box system, in 190The plaque is shield shaped and has some decorative scrolls and floral detailing.
