ARTIFACT:
Fabulous WWII United States Army Air Forces 1328th AAF Base Unit, India China Div. Air Transport Command. This beautiful patch was made in India for the 1328th Army Air Force Base Unit (India China Division, ATC) based out of Misamari, India. The unit transported all kinds of supplies of the US Army and USAAF war effort over the "Hump", the Himalayan Mountains. The insignia of the unit shows a bald headed Gremlin-like character riding a winged gasoline barrel, high above the Himalayas, aptly showing function of the unit, with the type of tongue in cheek humor so often seen in WWII patches. This particular example of the unit's patch looks to have been only very lightly worn (if not for the 4 areas of small sew holes at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, I would think it unworn), and remains in remarkable condition. It even has a rarely-seen paper maker's label on back. It is hard to read the hand-stamped label, but what we can make out is something close to: "SUMOUKMAN GHAFOOR K??? 1328TH PAC?ES MAKER", "TAJ TH(?)O", "AUSA ?O?ANTY"A very cool aspect of the label is the CBI patch at center! By the circa 1944 manufacture of this patch, the maker had obviously long been focused on manufacturing insignia for US Army & AAF forces in the region.
