ARTIFACT: This is a rare World War II distinctive insignia for the United States Army Air Forces 57th Fighter Group made in Cairo. 

The 57th Fighter Group spent time in North Africa from September 1942 until July 1943. 
During thsi time it was attached to: 

IX Fighter Command, 16 July 1942
U.S. Army Middle East Force, July 1942
Attached to Desert Air Task Force, 22 October 1942
IX Fighter Command, 12 November 1942
Attached to: Western Desert Air Force, 21 February 1943
Attached to: Desert Air Force, April 1943
Attached to: 7 South African Air Force No. 7 (South African) Wing, 21 May 1943

This DI reads FIRST IN BLUE and shows three red stars in the crest. This DI also comes with a veteran's reunion name badge for the 57th.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 1-1/8" in height x 15/16" in width (reunion badge: 3" in length x 2-7/16" in height).

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Brass, enamel (reunion badge: plastic).

ATTACHMENT: Vertical safety-style pin with saddle (safety-style pin and clip on reunion badge).

MARKINGS: None (maker mark on reunion badge, and labeled Charles Sawicki 64).

CONDITION: 6+ (Fine - Very Fine): The DI has some moderate wear and the enameling has some chips and is worn away in most of the lettering.
