ARTIFACT: This is an extremely rare Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps hat badge. Norton-Harjes was formed in 1914, Norton being the son of a prominent Harvard man and Harjes a French banker. Affiliated at first with the Red Cross, Norton-Harjes was one of the three largest volunteer ambulance groups in World War I and became part of the United States Army in the summer of 1917. The badge reads AMERICAN RED CROSS and shows a red cross at center.

VINTAGE: Circa World War I.

SIZE: Approximately 1-3/16" in diameter.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Gold-plated brass with red, white and blue enameled details.

ATTACHMENT: Two bendable prongs.

MARKINGS: None.
