Description

ARTIFACT:

This is an extremely rare World War II United States Army Air Forces unofficial "POW" wing. The wing, made by an Allied airman Prisoner of War, appears to have originated at Stalag-Luft 1, a Nazi Prison Camp in Barth, Germany, as "BARTH" is scratched lightly on the reverse. The wing was made in cast lead by a patient collector of cigarette and gum package wrappers. Russian soldiers ultimately freed Barth's resident POWs on the last night of April during the last year of the war.
