Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a really interesting, and extremely rare, early WWII x000D badge of an American Volunteer Unit in Finland, of all places.

This is a WWII badge for the all volunteer "Iroquois Ambulance Corps". Made by the prestigious "CARTIER" company of Paris, France and marked so on the reverse side. Pinback with a very different pin catch.

When the Russo-Finnish War broke out in 1939, Hasey, along x000D with other Americans, formed an ambulance unit, the Iroquois Ambulance Corps, x000D and headed to the war front to help aid the Finns. Later, some time in the x000D 1950s, Finland awarded him the Liberty Cross. After the war, and having x000D recovered from a wound to his arm, Hasey planned to return to his work at x000D Cartier.

With the German invasion of Western Europe, Hasey promptly x000D volunteered to join the Free French Forces led by General Charles de Gaulle. x000D During fighting around Damascus, Syria on June 20, 1941, Hasey's right jaw and x000D larynx were shot away by enemy machine gun fire. He was decorated by de Gaulle x000D as "the first American to shed blood for the liberation of France." x000D After his recovery, Hasey became a liaison between de Gaulle and Eisenhower. x000D During 1942, he co-wrote a book, Yankee Fighter: The Story of an American in x000D the Free French Foreign Legion with Joseph F Dinneen. In August 1943, he became x000D an aide-de-camp on the staff of General Marie Pierre Koenig, and remained with x000D Koenig during his term as military Governor of Paris, August 1944.
