This is a circa late 1860's Mattoon, Illinois six-pointed star Police Badge and is most likely the department's 1st issue.
The badge is a very early example of the fine work done by the C. H. Hanson Company of Chicago/
The star reads:
MATTOON

Circa late 1860's.
SIZE:About 2-3/8" in height x 2-1/8" in width.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Nickel-plated brass with painted lettering.
ATTACHMENT:Vertical pin with "C" catch.
