This is an absolutely Beautiful Hand Embroidered Bullion WWI US Air Service Military Aeronaut aka Balloon Pilot Wing mounted as a Pinback Wing. The Bullion work is exquisite, with extremely fine threads being used a the shroud lines for the balloon. The wing had incredible storage, as the bullion shows its age and patina will, but is fully intact, and there are no moth nips. There is also a lovely light patina on the pin assembly on back. Once in a collection, it would be hard to improve on this wing.
Balloon Pilot Wings from the period of WWI are exceedingly rare, as each Balloon Company only had a few, most of the Aviators in the Company being Observers instead of full Pilots.
World War I.
Approximately 1-1/16" in height x 3-1/4" in width.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Silver Bullion, Tinsel, and Wire, on Woven Wool, with Nickel Findings.
Horizontal pin with tongue type 'C' catch.
This is from a US Air Service Wing collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. CON-RLB-22 LEGIEX07/14/22 SEEJJX07/15/22
9- (Excellent +): The wing is in near perfect condition, with lovely deep patination to the obverse bullion, and nice patina on the findings on back as well. No mothing to woven wool.
GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
