ARTIFACT: This is a rare deluxe edition of the 1947 book "Overdue and Presumed Lost" by Martin Sheridan, a narrative about the United States Navy lost boat, USS Bullhead (SS-332). Unfortunately Bullhead's claim to fame was being the last US ship to be sunk during the war. On August 6, 1945, the same day as the Hiroshima bombing, Bullhead was targeted by a Japanese plane in the Java Sea and went down not even thirteen months after her launching at Groton, Connecticut. All 84 hands were lost. The author had been permitted to sail on the submarine during her first war patrol, the only war correspondent ever to be given the privilege, and his narrative is enhanced by first-hand accounts of rescues, camaraderie and near misses. The book about her service is leather-bound and comes in a slip cover.

VINTAGE: Circa 1947.
