Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a circa early 1940s lapel pin for Western Air Lines (WAL). Western began in 1926 as Western Air Express and merged with Transcontinental to become TWA in 1930. At this time, a portion of the company called Western Air Transport broke away, eventually becoming General Airlines and later WAL (then simply Western Airlines). The pin shows a slender arrow and a Native American head at center with WAL on his headdress band. The airline began in 1925 as an express service, then used the name Western Air Lines starting in 1941 and later condensed it to Western Airlines.
