ARTIFACT:
Circa 1935 USMC Devil Dogs WWI Aviation Movie Premium Ring from Quaker Oats. Devil Dogs of the Air starring Pat O'Brien and James Cagney was released in 1935. It was shot on location on the US Naval Base in San Diego and the Marine Attack Squadron 231 (VMA-231) make a prominent appearance in the film completing aerial stunts and fights, both USMC and USN aviators were the stars of the film. Also in the film are a number of unusual aircraft, including the rare USMC Curtiss RC-1 air ambulance. Devil Dogs of the Air was re-released in 1941 just before the United States entered WWII. The Marines allegedly earned the 'Devil Dogs' nickname during the 1918 Battle of Belleau Wood when the Germans said the Americans fought like "dogs from hell". The nickname stuck, despite questions regarding its real origin, and has become a motivational mantra for generations of Marines. This artifact was a movie premium ring from Quaker Oats and shows the head of a bulldog in relief with an "F" over its head.
