ARTIFACT:
This is a desk plaque sculpture originally belonging to USS Ranger CV-61 Commanding Officer Tony Less, dating to between April 1982 and August 1983, his service period on the Ranger. Earning his wings in 1961, Less served in Vietnam and became EO and then CO of VA-12. Among several other achievements, he became the first flight leader and CO of the "Blue Angels" in 1973. During his 16 month stay on the Ranger, just a small portion of his 34 year naval career, he presided over an historic landing of the first all-female air crew. His stint on the Ranger ended two years before the Ranger made Hollywood in scenes from the movie "Top Gun", and he moved on to become Commander of the 7th Fleet. Among other posts, Less subsequently became both Commander of Carrier Group One and later Commander of the Naval Air Force, Atlantic Fleet. He retired in 1994 with Vice Admiral rank, later becoming President of the Association of Naval Aviation and as Vice President Government Programs for Kaman Aerospace Corporation. The plaque is the carrier with a cleverly wrought jet above.
