ARTIFACT:

This is a circa World War I Utica, New York Home Defense League Special Officer Badge. 

The badge is a red, white and blue striped enameled shield and reads SPECIAL OFFICER CITY OF UTICA H.D.L.
Home Defense Leagues, and similarly named agencies, were set up profusely in cities around the country during WWI to watch for spies, sabotage, and anti-American activities. 
This is a great piece of Law Enforcement, and WWI Home Front, History. 

VINTAGE:

Circa World War I.

SIZE:

1-1/2" in height x 1-7/16" in width.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Silver-plated nickel/brass with enamel.

ATTACHMENT:

Vertical pin with tongue type "C" catch.
