ARTIFACT:
Cool, early 1960's Submarine USS Nathanael Greene (SSBN-636) Portsmouth Navy Yard lighter, in excellent unfired condition. Commissioned in 1964, SSBN-636 was built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. During the early 1970's the Nathanael Greene was converted to fire Poseidon missiles and departed for her first patrol in Scotland. In 1986, she ran aground and experienced severe, heavy damage to her hull and ballasts. The Cold War nuclear agreements were underway at this time and due to the USS Greene's extensive damage and nuclear restrictions set forth under the SALT II agreement, the USS Nathanael Greene was decommissioned in 1986. The lighter, made by Noble in Japan is navy blue enamel and on the front features a round disc with multi-colored paint details and letters reading: "SAILS TO ATOMS DEDICATED TO SUBMARINE PROGRESS PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD ESTAB. 1800" and the reverse features distinctive insignia in light blue and yellow paint with letters that read: "PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD NATHANAEL GREENE SSB (N) 636" and the lighter remains with the bottom half of its original box.
