Description
This is a 1950s Emergency Squad Inspector hat badge from the Toms River Chemical/Ciba-Geigy facility in Toms River, New Jersey. Toms River unfortunately made the map for having out of the ordinary cancer rates, a situation caused by the decades-long mishandling of manufacturing waste products and water supplies by three companies. Declared a Superfund site in 1983, Toms River had already been a dumping ground for 31 years, and it was not until a half dozen years later that Ciba-Geigy was ordered to begin cleaning efforts. The badge is topped by an eagle and shows firefighting equipment in relief at its center.
