Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a 1933 Italian commemorative bronze medal for Italo Balbo's historic transatlantic flight of sea planes from Rome to Chicago coinciding with the Century of Progress World's Fair. The badge is circular and one side shows a bear and a squadron of sea planes flying from the Colisuem to the skyscrapers of Chicago and reads REDIT ITALIA PER AETHERA MUSSOLINI DUCE BALBO DVCTORE MCMXXXIII-XI. The reverse shows a woman's head in profile with a star above the ocean and reads CROCIERA AEREA DEL DECENNAIE ROMA-CHICAGO NEW YORK-ROMA.
