ARTIFACT:
This is a Beautiful 1917 Bronze Large Table Medal Commander Joffre's Mission to the US in April 1917 by Ragot #'d 109.
In April and May 1917, French General Joseph Joffre visited the United States as part of a high-level war mission to coordinate American intervention in World War I. His main goals were to ensure the timely dispatch of American troops to the Western Front, to secure a plan for French-American military cooperation, and to build public support for the Allied cause. During his visit, he met with American leaders, was honored in large public ceremonies, and placed a wreath at George Washington's tomb.
Mission and goals
Coordination of military aid: Joffre's mission arrived shortly after the U.S. declared war on Germany. His primary objective was to develop a plan for American military intervention in the war, as French manpower reserves were diminishing.
Military cooperation: He aimed to reach an agreement with the American military leadership on the nature of future French-American military cooperation, which included an independent American army operating alongside the French and British forces.
Public support: The mission also sought to rally public support for the war effort and for France. Joffre was a revered figure in America, known as "the hero of the Marne" or the "Rock of the Marne".
