ARTIFACT:

This is a poignant artifact from WWI. I'm not sure if it was picked up in No Man's Land, or pulled off the chest of a crashed French Aviator, but it was found in a Tennessee estate, of a WWI soldier by a now departed friend & associate many years ago.

What we have here is a circa 1916 - 1917 Issue French Army Pilot Badge, #'d B 6440 on the reverse. Its is a Type 1 Badge, with the smaller numbering. It is intact, even with tis suspension bar, but it is bent up a bit and tarnished, like it took a hard hit in a crash landing, or perhaps was somehow dropped and run over a bit. But, the latter is a bit unlikely, since the suspension bar is still intact. For the years I have owned this, I have imagined it having been pulled from the uniform of a downed and deceased pilot. But, we will never know for certain. If only this badge could speak, to tell us its tale.

The badge is of the usual construction, gold and silver plated bronze, with brass suspension loops and suspension bar.

VINTAGE: 1916 or 1917.

SIZE: Approximately 1-5/8" in height x 2-1/8" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Gold and silver plated bronze, brass suspension loops and suspension bar

ATTACHMENT: Suspension loops and suspension bar.

MARKINGS: B 6440

ITEM NOTES: This is from a WWI and earlier French Military Aviation Collection, which we will be listing more of over the next few months. NDJJM17 LAEGEX07/17/22 SACEJX08/27/22

CONDITION: 5+ (Very Good): Moderate to heavy wear and patination, slightly misshapen from impact of some sort. But still very presentable, and a welcome addition to any collection.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
