ARTIFACT:
This is a circa 1900 Royal Bavarian 16th Infantry Regiment soldier's commemorative "Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany" (Kgl. Bayerisches 16. Infanterie-Regiment Gro§herzog Ferdinand von Toskana) stein. The simple yet beautiful stein originally belonged to a soldier named Josef Schosser, whose name is painted just beneath the lip of the stein. The 16th and its counterpart the 2nd Infantry Regiment "Crown Prince" were both part of the 2nd Royal Bavarian Infantry Brigade, which in turn was part of the 1st Royal Bavarian Division. The 1st, a unit of the Royal Bavarian Army, served in conjunction with the Prussian Army under the Imperial German Army. The stein is capped by a "crystal top", at the base of which is a scene of some soldiers enjoying themselves at a tavern. The stein also has an interior lithopane that can be viewed when its liquid contents have been finished off. The scene shows a man and woman in traditional Bavarian dress in a home setting. The top of the stein is ringed by embossed pewter and the thumb pad of the handle has a heraldic design. The stein itself is hand-painted in bright colors, with one scene of battle and another of reunited lovers. The center of the stein reads 16 INF RGT GRO§HERZOG FERDINAND 1 COMP. 1898-1900 LANDSHUT and ZUM ANDENKEN AN MEINE DIENSTZEIT (To memory of my service).
